Unlocking Insights: Key Themes in Coaching 2024

Hoolr is proud to announce the release of its latest research report into the trends and themes emerging from coaching in 2024. We release our trend reports every 6 months.

Coaching is a valuable tool for personal and professional development, providing individuals with a supportive environment to explore challenges, reflect on observations, and foster growth. This report presents the key themes derived from coach feedback and coaching data collected between January 2024 and July 2024 through the Hoolr platform.

The purpose of this analysis is to identify common themes emerging from the coaching world using data shared with Hoolr. The insights garnered from this analysis serve as valuable benchmarks and offer a glimpse of what common themes have appeared in conversations throughout the year.

All data used in this analysis was provided by those who opted in to sharing high-level themes with Hoolr.

The most common coaching needs identified by coachees and clients

Throughout the year, clients have consistently identified their most pressing coaching needs. The top three selected coaching priorities are as follows:

  1. Mental/ Emotional Resilience

  2. Changing Role

  3. Leadership Development

Some important trends to highlight regarding coaching needs:

  • The percentage of coachees asking for mental/emotional resilience support has grown from 13% to 19%.

  • Coaching focused on managing people has grown to account for 10% of coaching needs on Hoolr.

  • Changing role remains in the top three of coaching needs for 2024.

Cancellation trends

Hoolr helps coaches manage cancellations and report on trends. Whenever a session is cancelled, Hoolr asks coaches to report on the reason behind cancellations. Each coach/company will have their own cancellation policies, but these benchmarks can act as a helpful guide.

In 2024, coaching session cancellations trends were:

  • ·There are now 7 cancelled sessions for every 100 delivered compared to 5 in 2023.

  • The number of charged sessions cancelled sessions rose from 3% to 18%.

  • There has been a reduction in the number of cancelled sessions that were not charged for from 84% to 69%.

For the first time we have generated insight into themes between the public and private sector.

Public Sector Coaching Themes

Organisational change & culture development

Coachees noted the need for strategies to adapt to policy changes, restructuring, and maintaining a cohesive organisational culture amidst transitions.

Work life balance

Managing stress and achieving work-life balance were critical areas of focus, with many individuals seeking effective methods to prevent burnout and manage their workload.

Career development

Individuals expressed the need for clear career paths, professional growth opportunities, and support in navigating job responsibilities and preparing for organisational challenges.

Private Sector Coaching Themes

Leadership development

Coachees sought to enhance their leadership skills, improve decision-making capabilities, and lead their teams more effectively to drive business success.

Team Dynamics and interpersonal skills

Feedback emphasised the importance of managing people, improving working relationships, and building cohesive, high-performing teams.

Strategic thinking

Individuals focused on developing strategies for future goals, reflecting on past actions, and making informed, strategic decisions to ensure long-term success.
